LITURGICAL MUSIC SEMINAR
Diocesan Center For Evangelization
Sept. 6, 2008

RESOURCE PERSONS:

1. Rev Fr. Nilo Mangusad

(Minister of Commision on Liturgical Music and EDSA Shrine Administrator)
2. Rev. Fr. Carlomagno Marcelo (San Carlos Seminary)

A. SESSION OF FR. MANGUSAD:

  • Music is universal, understood by all nationalities, not gender specific appeals to all people from all walks of life, irrespective of age.
  • Even animals respond to music; e.g. cows can give more milk in response to certain music, spider drops from ceiling or goes up depending on a music passage.
  • Sacred Music is that which is created for the celebration of Divine Worship; talks about God, to give praise, love, adore Him etc. and as a result, people become sanctified, are renewed and become followers of God. We should be aware that the choice of music could send people either to Heaven, or Hell.
  • Liturgical Music is a type of Sacred Music that responds to the needs & requirements of Liturgy. For example, in Consecration, the requirements are a Priest, bread and wine, and the "formula" for transubstantiation.

NOT ALL SACRED MUSIC SATISFIES NEEDS OF LITURGY.

  • Sacred Music satisfies the needs of Liturgy if:
  1. corresponds to the spirit of the liturgical celebration (or in Tagalog, "tumutugon sa espiritu ng pagdiriwang ng liturhiya.")
  2. corresponds to the nature of the individual parts of the celebration (or in Tagalog, "tumutugon sa diwa ng bawa't bahagi ng pagdiriwang.")
  3. does not hinder active participation of the faithful (or in Tagalog, "hindi hadlang sa masiglang pakikilahok sa pagdiriwang.")
  • Songs must be selected based on the spirit of the liturgical celebration, i.e. they vary according to liturgical seasons. These are:
  1. Advent (4 weeks, violet vestments)
  2. Christmas (3 weeks, white vestments)
  3. Lent (5 weeks, violet vestments)
  4. Easter (8 weeks, white vestments)
  5. Ordinary Time (34 weeks, green vestments)

If song does not correspond to season, it's not liturgical. For example, we should sing Christmas songs only during December 25 Masses, not before. Otherwise we are not singing LITURGICAL SONGS.

FEASTS / SOLEMNITIES / MEMORIALS:

  • For Feasts of the Blessed Virgin Mary, e.g. December 8 and August 15, we may sing Marian songs during Communion. Specific to Feast of Immaculate Conception, songs "Mary Immaculate" and "Stella Maris" are allowed. Other Marian songs like "Ang Puso Ko'y Nagpupuri" and "Hail Mary" are not suitable to this occasion but to Visitation and other occasions.
  • Sept. 28 is the Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz, we can sing "Sanlibo Mang Aking Buhay"

Songs should also correspond to individual parts of the Mass, e.g.

PART OF MASS "MOOD" REMARKS
1. ENTRANCE JOYFUL

Song should GRACEFULLY end when priest reaches altar, not CUT SHORT. This is a song to accompany the procession of ordained ministers (priest & deacons), preceded by unordained ministers (altar servers, lectors, EMHC). Congregation stands "to welcome Christ and accompany Him and the ministers in the pilgrimage to the New Jerusalem."

2. PANGINOON, KAAWAAN MO KAMI NOT SAD, BUT "REQUESTING" "MAAWA KA" wording to be gradually phased out; look for song with "KAAWAAN MO KAMI"
3. GLORIA MAJESTIC Short versions are preferred since this belongs to introductory part of the Mass and Intro should not take up 15 min. or 25%. Sengson's version is near ideal-2 minutes. If priest says cut songs, this doesn't have to be sung.
4. RESPONSORIAL PSALM (SALMONG TUGUNAN) If priest says "cut songs", this part doesn't have to be sung, but recited. When there is a Cantor, he sings verses and Assembly sings response; or Choir sings response with Assembly and Cantor sings verses.
5. ALLELUIA HAPPY "Seek ye first" song is NOT AN ALLELUIA SONG. No Alleluia during Lent. ("Bless the Lord O My Soul" IS USUALLY sung to accompany procession of Priest to Ambo.)
6. PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS JOYFUL This part of Mass is not called "OFFERTORY". The song "UNANG ALAY" is most suitable because it was SPECIFICALLY composed to meet liturgical, musical and pastoral requirements of this part of the Mass. This is a thanksgiving song for God's gifts.
7. "BANAL" OR SANTO HAPPY Benedictus is part of the Santo song, not separate as before. If priest says cut songs, this still has to be sung.
8. ACCLAMATION DEPENDS ON SEASON There are four official versions; choose one appropriate for the season. If priest says cut songs, this still has to be sung. Martin Hogan's "We Remember" is not an acclamation song.
9. GREAT AMEN MAJESTIC Great affirmation. Repetition 3 times, shows it is a superlative statement.
10. AMA NAMIN MASCULINE, FIRM, POWERFUL KINGLY, DIGNIFIED There is no "Amen" at end of song. The English Our Father with humming and Amen, is not recommended since it appears the song was adopted from another song, and the words of Our Father were just fitted in. Malone's Our Father is not allowed for Mass, because the end is not really part of the Prayer.
11. KORDERO NG DIYOS SOLEMN Accompanies fraction of the Bread; "priest asks to be purified". The jazzy version is not encouraged.
12. PAKIKINABANG OR COMMUNION PROCESSIONAL, (to accompany communion procession of the Faithful) Choir can have voicings. Song selection appropriate for the season / occasion. Marian songs may be sung on feasts like Immaculate Conception or Assumption.
13. PANGWAKAS JOYFUL Though not anymore part of Mass, it should link people's thoughts to their experience during the Mass, and should still be a sacred song. Secular songs not allowed.

Songs should not hinder active participation of the assembly during the Mass. The choir should lead the congregation to sing. Active participation can be both internal and external.

  • Internal means listening, praying, meditating.
  • External means responding, kneeling, sitting, singing.

Though people sing, "they could be not actively participating," if their minds are somewhere else.

OTHER POINTS:

  • For Weddings, songs during Communion have to be liturgical, no secular songs are allowed.
  • Future regulations will include NO SECULAR SONGS INSIDE THE CHURCH, EVEN DURING PICTURE TAKING.
  • Organ music should be pipe organ-like, string instruments; NO PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS ALLOWED.

B. SESSION OF FR. MARCELO

FORMS OF SACRED MUSIC:

  • GREGORIAN CHANT - one melody
  • SACRED POLYPHONY - more than one melody
  • SACRED MUSIC - for organ and other instruments
  • SACRED POPULAR MUSIC

LITERARY MUSICAL FORMS:

  • ACCLAMATIONS
  • ROCESSIONAL SONGS (entrances, communion)
(Note: Whenever someone walks from one point to another, it is a procession; or the moment when somebody walks.)
  • RESPONSES
  • LITANIES (Kyrie, Lamb of God, Prayer of the Faithful)
  • PRAYER (Collect, Pater Noster)
  • HYMN (Gloria)

What does SACRED MUSIC contribute to LITURGY?

  • Adds delight to prayer
  • Fosters oneness in spirit
  • Invest rites with greater solemnity

ACTIVE PARTICIPATION

  • Full
  • Conscious
  • Active (gestures, singing, silence)

Silence is a liturgical action.

Music leads us to an experience of God. He who sings, prays twice. Music creates an ambience for hearts to be open to God. A good celebration fosters and nourishes Faith. A poor celebration weakens and destroys Faith.

IMPLICATIONS:

  • Signs must be simple and comprehensive
  • Signs must be humanly attractive
  • Signs must be meaningful and appealing to the Community, to stir up Faith
  • Signs must be short, clear and unencumbered. Love that is never expressed, dies; Faith that is not celebrated, dies.

Rise above feelings to respond to God in prayer.

Function of Music is Ministerial; should assist believer to express and share gift of Faith; nourishes / strengthens interior commitment; heightens the text to speak more fully and effectively.

Music imparts a sense of Unity to the Assembly, sets an appropriate tone for the celebration; clothes the celebration with Beauty, and UPLIFTS THE SOUL.

Three-fold Judgment: Musical, Liturgical and Pastoral

• MUSICAL JUDGMENT

- Technically Good? Correct, Clear, Complete;
- Aesthetically Good? Pleasing, captivating, engaging ;
- Expressively Good? Dynamic, emphatic.

Judgment of Musical Value is different from Musical Style.

Liturgical Music should be good music.

LITURGICAL JUDGMENT

- Balance between STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENT & STYLE OF MUSICAL SETTINGS USED.
- It should reflect the relative importance of the Part of the Mass, and the nature of its part.

The two main parts of the Mass are LITURGY OF THE WORD & LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST. The Introductory (Entrance up to Gloria) and the Concluding parts (Blessing up to Recessional) are not as important as the two aforementioned parts. The latter two "minor" parts should not consume half of the Total Mass time, but a smaller fraction.

Textual Requirement - does music express and interpret the text correctly and make it more meaningful?

Role Differentiation - Who will sing? Cantor or Congregation? If Congregation will sing, it should be simple. The Cantor, who is usually trained, can sing more difficult tunes.

The Choir leads people by reinforcing, enhancing; sometimes Choir sings and people don't join.

PASTORAL JUDGMENT

- DOES THE MUSIC ENABLE PEOPLE TO EXPRESS THEIR FAITH
- In this place, in this age, in this culture?

PARTS OF THE MASS:

  1. PROPER OF THE MASS - Chants and prayers that vary from day to day i.e. Entrance, Response, Alleluia verse, Offertory, Communion Hymns.
  2. ORDINARY OF THE MASS - i.e. Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Ite Missa Est.

If Priest says "Cut Songs," the following may be "dropped" or just recited: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Pater Noster, Agnus Dei.

The following are not to be "dropped": Acclamation, Alleluia, Sanctus, Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, Doxology to the Lord's Prayer, Processional Songs like Entrance and Communion, and Exit.

Note on "Anima Christi"

- Theoretically not a Communion Song, but a prayer after Communion.
- If we want to sing it, it may be started when half of congregation has received Communion.

Present during the Seminar: Connie Baylon (Worship Commission Head), Zeny Veloso (Music Ministry Head), Rory de Vela (AP), Baby Samonte (AP), Panny Cornejo (MBG), Leng Ramilo (PREX), Victor Sevilla (Youth), Julius Jereza (Grand Choir & BCBP)
